Language partners

Where conversations build community

The language partners project aims to promote the social use of Catalan through informal conversations. Participants include, on one hand, members of the Ateneu who volunteer, and on the other hand, students of Club del Català who want to practice the language in a real and familiar context.

Each language partnership is formed according to the availability and interests of the participants. Meetings focus on spontaneous conversation and everyday activities that allow the learner to gain fluency, confidence, and independence in using Catalan. It is not about taking classes, but about sharing conversation time that facilitates natural language learning.

The project strengthens relationships and social cohesion within the Ateneu Barcelonès, while also promoting Catalan outside its walls, contributing to a more open, active, and linguistically vibrant community.

Valèria, from Siberia, and Agustí, from Barcelona, have been exploring the best bookstores in Barcelona. They enjoy talking about literature; she is increasingly familiar with Catalan literature, and Agustí likes listening to the stories she tells him about her home country.

Suzanne is a translator from the United States, and her language partner, Miquel, is a retired English teacher. They share a passion for languages and enjoy looking for similarities and differences between her language and Catalan.
